Household Charge a Requirement of EU/IMF
The Household Charge was created and enacted in accordance with the EU/IMF Programme of Financial Support for Ireland’s requirement for a property tax. Since property tax will take time before it is finalized and implemented, the government decided to implement the Household Charge in preparation for the introduction of the property tax.
Under the Local Government (Household Charge) Act 2011 states that if you own a residential property or properties in Ireland, whether you are living in or outside the country, you must declare a liability and pay for its annual household charge on or after January 1, 2012.
Practically every private property, as well as apartments and bedsits, are accountable for the Household Charge, with just a few exceptions. Mobile homes are just one of the exceptions.
Proceeds from Household Charge will be used to fund local services such as maintenance and cleaning of streets, public parks, street lighting, fire and emergency services, and many more local services that are of great service and essential use to the people.
Household Charge which is €100, is payable online through householdcharge.ie website, or you can drop by at your local council office. Any payment made after the due date will have a charge such as payment interests and fees.
Household Charge: A Closer Look
With the approved bailout agreement with EU/IMF Programme of Financial Support for Ireland, comes a condition that the government should have a property tax. This property tax is designed to maintain Support and improve local services.
Household Charge money will be used to fund local services that are very useful to the people such as fire and emergency services, maintenance and cleaning of streets and street lighting, public parks, libraries, open spaces and leisure amenities, and planning and development.
Home owners are required under the Local Government (Household Charge) Act 2011 to pay an annual household charge on or after January 1, 2012. Also those home owners who are living outside of Ireland are not exempted from paying their Household Charge.
This amendment was introduced by the Local Government Household Legislation and was enacted on January 1, 2012. It aims to put local services on a more firm and sound financial footing. Also it improves accountability and balance the cost of providing local services with the demand for it.
The government opted for the household charge in preparation for the introduction of property tax. This only means that household charge is only temporary while property tax is still being worked out by the government.
The HouseHold Charge is 100 euros per house and thats just for the first year, next year it will be more regulated and more expensive, On Saturday the 31 March over 10,000 Irish citizens from all demographics marched, the mix of people was great, they came from every county in Ireland and they were marching in Dublin from Parnell square down o’Connell street and up the quays up to the convention centre where Fine Gael were having there Ard Fheis
The Protest manage to reach the Convention centre, but it wasnt possible for anyone to enter due to the police barricade, but as various Fine gael Members arrived they were meet by protestors shouting “Shame on you”. appropriately so.
Local Government (Household Charge) Act 2012 does require all residential property owners to pay the house tax of 100 euro and there are some exceptions to the rules. such examples of Household Charge Waivers are If you are a homeowner and are entitled to a Mortgage Interest Supplement (read details here) or you can apply for Household Charge exemptions If a dwelling is accountable for commercial rates.
